cedar shake roof.

As with any roofing material, cedar shakes suffer from the effects of Mother Nature and break down over time. A combination of ultraviolet light, humidity, shade and heat have a particular effect on cedar roofing and premature deterioration can and will result if left neglected. The life of cedar, though very durable, depends largely on the environment in which it exists.

Left unprotected, cedar suffers from many ailments: photo degradation caused by sunlight; shrinking and swelling caused by the absorption and evaporation of water within the wood; and discoloration caused by the presence of decay-promoting micro-organisms.
